When to book your newborn photography session (and why timing matters) with Marlie & Jo. Photography

Bringing a new baby into the world is such a special time, and capturing those early moments with a professional newborn photoshoot is something you’ll cherish forever. But when is the best time to schedule your session? Here’s everything you need to know about the ideal timing for newborn photography.

The Best Age for Newborn Photography

The sweet spot for newborn photos is usually between 4 and 14 days old. During this little window, babies are still beautifully sleepy, and naturally curl into those beautiful womb-like poses that are just so dreamy to photograph. They’re also much easier to settle at this age, which helps the session flow smoothly, and keeps everything calm and relaxed.

Another reason this time is so perfect is because baby acne and colic haven’t usually started yet. Those tend to pop up around weeks three or four. And that beautifully flaky newborn skin… isn’t it just the sweetest? I love how it tells the story of those very first days so fresh, so new. These details disappear so quickly and are far too precious not to capture. Tiny fingers, curled-up toes, and delicate little features are preserved exactly as they are, creating timeless images you’ll treasure forever.

Is Four Days Too Early for Newborn Photos?

Now, if you’re thinking four days sounds way too early, I completely understand. But truly, it’s not too soon at all. Many mums are surprised by just how much their baby sleeps in those first few days, and that deep sleep is exactly what allows for those soft, curled-up poses. Even if breastfeeding is your chosen feeding method and you’re still finding your rhythm, as long as bub is having full feeds, we’re in a great place to go ahead. A full tummy equals a sleepy baby, and a sleepy baby makes for a beautifully smooth session.

That said, if you’re experiencing feeding challenges or simply feel you need a little more time to find your groove, that’s absolutely okay. Your wellbeing always comes first. You can book your session a little later, just keeping in mind that those earliest days carry a unique kind of magic that fades all too quickly.

Every session is baby-led, gentle, and slow-paced. I never force a pose, and your baby’s comfort and safety are always my top priority. We take plenty of time for feeding, cuddles, and settling so that the experience is calm, relaxed, and completely tailored to your little one’s needs.

What If My Baby Is Older Than Two Weeks?

If you’ve missed the first two weeks, don’t worry! Newborn sessions can still take place up to 6 weeks old, but there are some differences:

  • Babies may be more alert and less likely to stay in curled-up poses.

  • They might need extra time for settling and soothing.

  • You’ll see more eye contact and adorable expressions!

For babies older than six weeks, a lifestyle session might be a great option. These sessions focus on natural moments with parents and siblings in a relaxed, cosy setting such as an outdoor setting or in the comfort of your home.

When Should I Book?

It’s best to book your newborn session during your second trimester to ensure availability. Since due dates can be unpredictable, I only take a limited number of newborn sessions per month to allow flexibility in scheduling the actual photo shoot dates after babies are born.

In-Studio vs. In-Home Sessions

  • Studio Sessions: Held in my cosy studio “The Schoolhouse”, a charming little cottage in my backyard. With a beautifully curated collection of props and a client closet for both mum and bub (I also have a few pieces for dads-just reach out, and I’d be happy to help!), I make sure your session feels effortless and uniquely you.

  • In-Home Sessions: More relaxed and lifestyle-oriented, capturing sweet family moments in your own space, including nursery details and even pets.

Every baby is unique, and regardless of their age, we’ll create beautiful memories that you’ll treasure forever. If you’re expecting and would love to document your newborn’s early days, I’d love to chat and help plan the perfect session for your family!
